Treatment
This page puts the label and trial numbers in order, for both topical minoxidil (approved over the counter for men's hair loss) and oral minoxidil (a blood pressure tablet prescribed off-label for hair). The Rogaine label quoted here is the DailyMed version published November 2024. Patient videos appear further down as illustration only.

When minoxidil shedding starts
Shedding is the part that scares men off. A 2026 review lists "increased hair shedding during the initial phase of treatment" among the most common side effects of topical minoxidil (Dias et al., Frontiers in Pharmacology 2026). Dermatologists usually explain it as resting hairs being pushed out as follicles restart a growth cycle, which is why it tends to cluster at the start.
It does not happen to everyone. In one prospective study of men using topical minoxidil, the authors reported "11% increased shedding" (Shukla et al. 2026), and noted that "initial increased shedding can reduce compliance" in the same abstract.

Shedding on oral minoxidil
Oral minoxidil can shed too. A 2025 review of oral use lists "transient shedding (16-22%)" among its common adverse effects (Ong, Li and Lipner, Am J Clin Dermatol 2025). A 2026 cohort study from NYU is titled "Temporary shedding with low-dose oral minoxidil initiation does not preclude long-term benefit" (Spindler et al., JAAD 2026). In other words, early shedding in that cohort did not mean the drug had failed.
When shedding stops
We found no label or trial abstract that gives a fixed end date for minoxidil shedding, so we do not give one. The sources describe it as temporary and tied to the start of treatment. If shedding is heavy, patchy, or still going after the first few months, that is a question for the prescriber, not something to wait out alone.
When regrowth shows
The label sets the expectations: "it takes time to regrow hair. Results may occur at 2 months", and "the amount of hair regrowth is different for each person. This product will not work for all men." It also tells you to stop and ask a doctor if "you do not see hair regrowth in 4 months" (DailyMed: Men's Rogaine foam label).
The longer trials ran to 48 weeks. Comparing strengths, the authors found "response to treatment occurred earlier with 5% compared with 2% topical minoxidil", with "45% more hair regrowth than 2% topical minoxidil at week 48" (Olsen et al., JAAD 2002).
For oral against topical, a 24-week randomized trial in Brazil found oral minoxidil "did not demonstrate superiority over topical minoxidil" overall, though on photos "oral minoxidil was superior to topical minoxidil on the vertex" (Penha et al., JAMA Dermatology 2024). Which form, and what strength, is the prescriber's call; this site does not give doses.
What happens if you stop minoxidil
The gain depends on continued use. The label says "continued use is necessary to increase and keep your hair regrowth or hair loss will begin again" (DailyMed: Men's Rogaine foam label). Unwanted body hair from minoxidil also fades after stopping: the 2026 review reports it "typically begins on the face and arms within 1–3 months, followed by the legs within 4–5 months" (Dias et al., Frontiers in Pharmacology 2026).
What the videos show
Shedding videos are some of the most watched hair loss videos online: men filming their sink, their pillow, then a month-by-month photo series. They are individual experiences, not evidence. A video cannot tell you whether a shed is the expected early kind or a different problem, and lighting changes a scalp photo a lot.

Questions
FAQ
When does minoxidil shedding start?
In the early weeks of treatment, when it happens at all. Reviews describe it as a side effect of the initial phase. Not every man sheds: one study of topical users reported increased shedding in about one in ten.
How long does minoxidil shedding last?
No label or trial abstract we read gives a fixed duration, so we do not quote one. Sources describe it as temporary. Shedding that is heavy, patchy or lasting past the first few months is worth raising with your prescriber.
Does shedding mean minoxidil is working?
Not on its own. A 2026 cohort found early shedding on oral minoxidil did not rule out long-term benefit, but shedding is not proof of benefit either. Regrowth at the label's 2 to 4 month checkpoints is the better sign.
When will I see results from minoxidil?
The Rogaine label says results may occur at 2 months and some men need at least 4 months. Trials ran to 24 and 48 weeks for their main results.
Does oral minoxidil shed more than topical?
Reviews report transient shedding in 16 to 22% of oral users. We found no head-to-head trial abstract comparing shedding rates between the two forms.
What happens if I stop minoxidil?
Hair loss begins again, according to the label. The regrowth depends on continued use.
Can I use minoxidil with finasteride?
Many prescribers pair them. See our [finasteride timeline](/guides/finasteride-timeline) and [finasteride and minoxidil guide](/guides/finasteride-and-minoxidil); the choice is your clinician's.
